Meet Rev. Sonja B. Williams, PhD

    Director of Cancer Health Equity 

    As the Director of Cancer Equity, Rev. Dr. Sonja B. Williams is a seasoned practical theologian and certified thanatologist. With a PhD in Practical Theology from St. Thomas University, a Master of Divinity from Louisville Seminary, and a bachelor’s in communication from Berea College. Her work is deeply rooted in the integration of culture, science, and religion. Throughout her career, Dr. Williams has served in leadership roles, including Chief Academic Officer and Dean, where she led in curriculum development, program oversight and student round about services. As an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ, she is dedicated to addressing the psychosocial needs of those impacted by illness, loss, and societal marginalization. Dr. Williams is also a leader in innovative projects such as The Awe and Aesthetics of Nature, Project Proclaim, and Urban Chaplaincy. These initiatives emphasize community engagement and transformative experiences through theological and psychosocial interventions. In her free time, Dr. Williams enjoys watching WMBA games, reading books by Octavia Butler, and attending live music events.
