The theme, "Light the Way," reflects the guiding role that Wellness House plays in helping people navigate the emotional, physical and practical challenges of cancer. This year's chairs - Dr. Angela Crowley and Dr. R. Webster Crowley; Jennifer Carmody Haunty and Jake Haunty; and Dr. Gale England Smith and Stephen Smith - all of Hinsdale, have deeply personal reasons to step into leadership roles this year. If it's true that everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another (including this columnist), it's doubly so for this year's chairs, three of whom are doctors and three of whom lost their spouses to cancer. - [Finding Hope Again - Light the Way Wellness House Ball](https://wellnesshouse.org/finding-hope-again-light-the-way-wellness-house-ball/): For Jennifer Carmody Haunty and Jake Haunty, Wellness House represents far more than a place. It represents connection, community and the reminder that no one has to face cancer alone.Although their paths would eventually intersect, each first experienced cancer through profound personal loss. Jennifer's journey began in June 2012 when her husband, Matt, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 38. At the time, the couple had three young children, with a fourth on the way. After a year in remission, the family moved to Hinsdale in July 2013. One year later, Matt's cancer returned, and he passed away while preparing for a stem-cell transplant. - [In This Together - Light the Way Wellness House Ball](https://wellnesshouse.org/in-this-together-light-the-way-wellness-house-ball/): Every cancer story is as unique as a thumbprint. One part medicine, one part mystery. Yet, the journeys for those living with cancer and those who love them are often achingly similar. At first, it feels isolating. Unfair. There are good days and bad days, some more hopeful than others. Without warning, Plan A can turn into Plan B, and then C. No dates can be set other than your next treatment. And as this goes on, weeks turning into months and months turning into years, the emotional toll can be just as impactful as the disease itself. - [Meet Havil Maddela, MBA, MPH, CPH](https://wellnesshouse.org/meet-havil-maddela-mba-mph-cph/): As our Engagement Manager, Havil builds relationships and increases awareness of Wellness House and its services among medical and non-medical communities throughout Chicagoland. - [Meet Sofia Herron Geller, MPH](https://wellnesshouse.org/meet-sofia-herron-geller/): Sofia Herron Geller is the Community Oncology Engagement Associate at Wellness House. With kids back in school, soccer nets up at the parks and "Friday Night Lights" festivities in full effect, we're now officially looking at our calendars for what's coming up on the social scene. There may not be another fall event as highly anticipated as the Wellness House Ball. Dr. Russell Szmulewitz, professor of medicine and director of the genitourinary oncology program at UChicago Medicine's Comprehensive Cancer Center, said such high-profile advocates for prostate health can destigmatize the topic for men reluctant to discuss sensitive health issues. "These public-facing cases have opened up people's eyes to the fact that this affects more than 300,000 men a year," Szmulewitz said. "Even for those that aren't affected by the illness, it makes it a little bit personal and legitimizes the struggle that (patients) face with their illness. They know that they're not alone and that even famous people are battling this illness." September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and Wellness House is hosting its annual Hot Topics in Prostate Cancer symposium on Saturday, Sept 27, where Szmulewitz will present updates in medical oncology as one of the participating physicians (see Page 19 for details). - [Hinsdale's Healing Home](https://wellnesshouse.org/hinsdales-healing-home/): For the last 15 years, Elaine Adams has been volunteering at Wellness House in Hinsdale. The three were attending a showcase at Wellness House’s location in University of Illinois at Chicago’s Mile Square Health Center when they discovered Janice had been friends with Yolanda’s sister, who died from Covid while being treated for multiple myeloma. “After that day, we became instant family,” Janice said. - [The Heart Behind the Scenes](https://wellnesshouse.org/the-heart-behind-the-scenes/): As we celebrate 35 years of hope at Wellness House, we are honored to shine a light on the extraordinary people who make this community what it is. Few embody that spirit more deeply than Pat Janik—a longtime volunteer whose quiet, steady presence has helped thousands of participants feel supported the moment they walk through our doors. - [A Place Like No Other](https://wellnesshouse.org/a-place-like-no-other/): At Wellness House, hope is not a distant promise. It is something you feel the moment you walk through the door. For Johnny, navigating life with cancer in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, that moment came when he least expected it and exactly when he needed it most. “When I first heard about Wellness House, I didn’t take the time to really look through the materials,” Johnny admits. “I thought, ‘I’ve got too much going on to be going to some program.’” But the nurses at his hospital kept mentioning it, particularly one young woman who wouldn’t give up on him. - [Finding Strength Through Every Season](https://wellnesshouse.org/finding-strength-through-every-season/): Jackie’s journey with cancer began in 2021 with a diagnosis that shook her world—but not her spirit. “At first, I was shocked. But something in me said, ‘You have to do this. Be strong,’” she recalls. From her home on the South Side of Chicago, Jackie faced each stage of her breast cancer treatment with a quiet determination, fueled by her faith, her family, and the love of her husband, Todd—and their 12-year-old rescue dog, Bella. - [Jim McMahon: A Legacy of Leadership and Commitment ](https://wellnesshouse.org/jim-mcmahon-a-legacy-of-leadership-and-commitment/): Throughout the history of Wellness House, a few extraordinary leaders have left a lasting imprint on the organization’s growth and direction. Jim McMahon is one of those individuals—an inspiring leader whose vision, dedication, and steady hand helped Wellness House flourish during its formative years. - [A Warm Welcome For All](https://wellnesshouse.org/a-warm-welcome-for-all/): At the front desk of Wellness House, Josette Cray has answered phones, greets visitors, and has offered a smile that makes everyone feel at home. For Josette, volunteering isn’t just about logistics; it’s about connection. “You’re the first person a participant sees when they walk in the door,” she says. “I like being the person who makes them feel welcome.” - [What I Was Looking For](https://wellnesshouse.org/what-i-was-looking-for/): As the baby of her family, Maria Villafuerte is accustomed to being cared for and protected by her two older sisters. But when it came to facing her life post-cancer, Maria found she needed more. - [Frank Wills: A Practice of Healing](https://wellnesshouse.org/frank-wills-a-practice-of-healing/): Among the many individuals whose dedication helped shape Wellness House is Frank Wills, a beloved volunteer whose impact continues to be felt long after his passing. Frank arrived at Wellness House in 1992, just as our newly built home opened its doors. From the very beginning, he brought not only a unique skill set, but also a deep sense of ownership and belonging. Passionate about the healing power of Qi Gong, - [Making it Through Together](https://wellnesshouse.org/making-it-through-together/): My children were 5 and 8 yrs old when I was diagnosed with cancer. They asked me "Are you going to die now Mommy"? I read about the Wellness House in our local Hinsdale weekly newspaper. I was hopeful my children and I could navigate this disease better there than by ourselves. My son was in kindergarten, and my daughter was in third grade. - [My Place of Comfort and Community](https://wellnesshouse.org/my-place-of-comfort-and-community/): “I remember it as if it were yesterday. Just three weeks after Kevin’s well-baby checkup, he began complaining of pain in his foot. At first, it only happened at night, but soon the frequency increased, and Kevin started having trouble climbing the stairs. At the time, I was working 4–6 days a month as a nurse at the hospital. When I shared Kevin’s symptoms, some of my peers reassured me by saying their sons also complained of “growing pains.” Looking back, those words echo in my mind as I think of how quickly things changed for us. - [Inspiration Through Friendships and Knowledge](https://wellnesshouse.org/inspiration-through-friendships-and-knowledge/): In June 2013, Haruko received shocking news. She was diagnosed with Stage 2 Estrogen Positive Breast Cancer. After the initial shock, Haruko underwent a single mastectomy and chemotherapy. She learned about the programs at Wellness House, attended a film screening about breast cancer, and later joined the Rush-Oak Park Breast Cancer Group. - [Attitude of Gratitude](https://wellnesshouse.org/attitude-of-gratitude/): Betty Lofton has always practiced gratitude, even before her journey with cancer. Her journey began in November 2019 after a routine mammogram led to Betty’s diagnosis with breast cancer. “I was getting a lot of information from my surgeon and oncologist who believed my cancer was estrogen-driven,” says Betty. To learn more about the cancer experience, Betty participated in two Wellness House support groups at Rush-Oak Park. Betty also participated in Mile Square Health Center Programs Cooking for Cancer, Thriving and Surviving, Tai Chi, Total Body Stretch, Soul Chat and the Mindfulness Series. - [Elevated](https://wellnesshouse.org/elevated/): Wellness House offered me so much more than exercise classes, cooking classes, support groups, and fun events. Through all of those offerings are each more amazing than the next, what it provided me with ( for which I am most grateful ) is a place that understands my experiences and needs and in the process of that understanding, enveloped me with so much warmth, care and love. - [Knowledge to Fight Cancer](https://wellnesshouse.org/knowledge-to-fight-cancer/): I attended the Wellness House Multiple Myeloma support group beginning in 2006 after my husband's diagnosis. I had never heard of MM, and it seemed unbelievable that there was a support group right in my neighborhood - we lived in Oak Brook. Felt like divine intervention. My husband, Frank, had been in ill health for all of 2006. He had gone repeatedly to his doctor, who ran multiple blood tests and found nothing amiss. Frank had pneumonia twice, lost over 20 pounds, and was in constant pain. Something was very wrong. A friend recommended an MRI - not the doctor, mind you, but a friend in the healthcare field. The MRI showed that Frank was "full of cancer" - his bones looked like Swiss cheese. Knowing now what I know about this disease, all the symptoms suggested multiple myeloma. - [Help When I Needed It Most](https://wellnesshouse.org/help-when-i-needed-it-most/): I attended groups at Wellness House from 2012-2014 with others who were going through breast cancer treatments at different stages of their treatment. I was able to attend the make-up session which was so helpful as I lost all my facial hair. The facilitator of this program actually provided me with a private session as I was in and out of the hospital during my chemo and missed two of the group sessions. I appreciated that so much. I was given a free wig to cover my bald head - I brought my stylist with me since I really trusted her input - we had so much fun! I also attended many of the educational sessions that I felt were extremely valuable during that time of my life. - [Wellness House Delivers Evidence-Based Programs from 1990 and Beyond](https://wellnesshouse.org/evidence-based-from-1990-and-beyond/): In 1990, the Chicago Tribune reported on a groundbreaking study from UCLA showing that cancer patients who participated in structured support groups experienced more than emotional relief—they demonstrated measurable improvements in immune function and quality of life. Patients who attended weekly sessions learned relaxation techniques, shared their fears and coping strategies, and reported feeling less depressed and more resilient. Notably, the study suggested that psychosocial support might even influence survival outcomes, with patients in support groups living significantly longer than those who received only medical care (Chicago Tribune, October 26, 1990). - [Meet Annie Chaljub](https://wellnesshouse.org/meet-annie-chaljub/): Community Oncology Engagement Associate As a Community Oncology Engagement Associate at Wellness House, Annie Chaljub is responsible for building relationships across Chicagoland to increase awareness and referrals for Wellness House programs. In the late 1980's, Diane thought that surviving her ovarian cancer would be impossible. Then a friend and long-time cancer survivor, Stella Pauls, paid Diane a visit. Sitting at her hospital bed, Stella talked Diane into facing the challenges of cancer and living to enjoy her two beautiful children. Diane had gone on to overcome cancer and savor the teenagers her children have grown to be. - [You’ll Feel Better Inside/Bob Akers and Tim O’Day  ](https://wellnesshouse.org/youll-feel-better-inside-bob-akers-and-tim-oday/): All non-profits must maintain laser focus on excellent stewardship of donor dollars. Similarly, board members must bring forth resources to effectively fulfill the organization's mission. In the end, what matters most to Wellness House is that talented, generous, passionate individuals get "bitten by the Wellness House bug" and jump in to do what they can in the service of people affected by cancer. This is exactly what happened to Bob Akers and Tim O'Day in the summer of 2009. - [Dreamers - Cheri Jones](https://wellnesshouse.org/dreamers-cheri-jones/): When we look at today's Wellness House, it can be hard to imagine that 35 years ago, the organization did not exist except in a small group of community members' imaginations. Those early dreamers believed profoundly in the need for this resource. They were not sure, however, that such an organization could ever be successfully created and sustained. - [A Game Changer](https://wellnesshouse.org/a-game-changer/): In 2016 I began my journey being diagnosed with a rare form of gynecological cancer that only 2 in a million get.
